The origins of the day that is now celebrated in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George's Day - a tradition started over 80 years ago.But World Book Day is not celebrated on the same day in every country. In Spain we celebrate it on 23 rd April, do you know WHY???
Miguel de Cervantes , William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega died on a 23 rd April. But even more. other important writers such as Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla or Maurice Druon were born or died on that date. For these reasons, this date - 23rd April -which is a symbol for universal literature was chosen by UNESCO to celebrate World Book Day.
As we said before , this idea came from Cataluña, where it is traditional to be given a rose when you buy a book on 23 rd April.
