Hi kids,

Next Tuesday , many people around the world will celebrate a special aniversary:

50 YEARS OF HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT

Yuri's Night is a worldwide celebration to commemorate the first human spaceflight by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961.

History

In the late 1950s, after successfully launching the first satellite Sputnik into orbit, the Soviet Union began to prepare for the first human spaceflight. By August 1960, they succeeded in launching several plants, two dogs, some rats, mice and a rabbit into orbit and recovered them alive.

Only 8 months after this achievement, a 27-year-old military pilot from a small village called Klushino was selected out of 20 candidates to be the pilot of the Vostok 3KA-3 spacecraft. Scheduled to launch on 12th April 1961, his mission would mark the first flight of a human into space. His name was Yuri Gagarin.

At exactly 06:08 UTC, the spacecraft was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (former Soviet Union) to carry Yuri for 108 minutes through space, making one complete orbit around the Earth. He returned as a national hero, inspiring millions of people and future generations all over the world.

"Circling the Earth in the orbital spaceship, I marvelled at the beauty of our planet. People of the World let us safeguard and enhance  this beauty - not destroy it!"
